Director Bio:

Lauren Goetzman is an Israeli-American filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Lauren earned her BA in Economics and Creative Writing from Wesleyan University before continuing her film education at Columbia University where she received an MFA in Film. She’s produced multiple short narrative films, including Bruiser which premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival before traveling to other Oscar-Qualifying festivals, including SXSW and Atlanta Film Festival, and She Always Wins with lead actress Honor Swinton-Byrne which had its world premiere at TIFF’s 2022 Film Festival. As she pivots to directing, her work centers around raw, often female-driven stories, ones that address migration and cultural identity.

Director Statement:

Having been raised in a Hebrew-speaking household in Los Angeles, I felt I was always searching, stuck in the middle, never fully belonging to one place or the other. When I hear people speak Hebrew around me, this part of me feels like it’s more right. It’s more ‘home’ than when I speak English.

When I was in high school, my uncle passed away. Soon after, my cousin passed away at twenty-two. Then, my other cousin at twenty-six. Growing up, I felt occupied in trying to reconcile my family’s pain, viewing grief as this mysterious weight. It wasn’t until recently that I began to feel angry at my family’s reaction. These losses built a feeling of deep cultural abandonment. Traditions were lost, Shabbat dinners became a rarity, family members began to drift apart, unable to reconcile their pain, casting feelings onto each other of guilt and blame. Through this lens, I began to see my family’s grief as a cautionary tale, to never lose your cultural identity, especially when hardships are faced. I felt an urgency to shed light on the importance of tradition, especially in the Jewish community where generations of trauma made us afraid of being ourselves. When I am in the Kosher Market with my mother and grandmother it is this magical feeling of puzzle pieces fitting together, a curiosity for my own family which I feel an inspiring connection to. I’ve always wanted to immortalize the women who taught me the strength and brilliance to never forget where I came from. This film is a love letter to them.

DALIA (Female, 55-75, Caucasian, Middle Eastern): Co-Lead

Reut’s mother who is Tunisian-born. Traditional, overbearing at times, and sweet. She can be demanding because she is stuck in her outdated ways. At the end of day, she is submissive and likes to please because of her dependence on her daughter.

ROLE REQUIRES TALENT THAT IS FLUENT IN HEBREW, SHE WILL BE SPEAKING BOTH HEBREW AND ENGLISH DURING HER SCENES.

GISELLE (Female, 55-75, Caucasian, Middle Eastern): Supporting

Reut’s Aunt. A sharpness to her look and the way she behaves. The opinionated and hard to handle outcast of the family – and for good reason. She strongly believes and practices Sephardic superstition and feels a strong connection to what she perceives as its mystical powers.

ROLE REQUIRES TALENT THAT IS FLUENT IN HEBREW, SHE WILL BE SPEAKING BOTH HEBREW AND ENGLISH DURING HER SCENES.

NEEDED FOR TWO DAYS WITH EXACT SHOOT DATES TBD
