Judah (M)

Age: Early 30s/Late 20s

Defining qualities:

Ambitious, natural confidence, leader.

Physical characteristics:

Should look like a leader when you see him – tall, commanding presence, confident but not cocky; Takes care of his body and pays attention to how he presents himself

Ethnicity: Middle Eastern

Additional info

• Judah is the head salesman of the family business

• He is used to being at the top as a result of his hard work and leadership qualities.

He is very by the book, has a system in business that works for him and has stuck to it since it’s proven successful. He is not necessarily the most open to change and new ideas.

• Very much a leader in his family even though he’s not the oldest brother. He has a natural authority to him (without being domineering) that causes people to listen to him. His brothers typically defer to him.

• Not emotionally open. He can come across as guarded with his true emotions since he is likely used to burying them, even without recognizing it.

• He is very aware of how he presents himself externally probably to make up for any lack he may feel internally.

• Subconsciously searching for his father’s approval. More than the power/business, he wants his dad to be proud of him/give approval, and seeing Joseph get that makes him want it all the more. He is a little bothered by Joseph, typically dismissive of him, but not threatened by him until his position is at risk.

• Places his confidence in his success and leadership; feels insecure when that’s challenged. He feels threatened once the shift in power moves to Joseph. Part of this threat is motivated by their mothers (Joseph being Jacob’s favored half-brother)

Physical characteristics:

Non-specific, the years he’s put into running a business and raising his sons likely shows on his face in his demeanor though he tries to hide it; puts his attention into his work more than into himself

Ethnicity: Middle Eastern

Additional Info:

• Jacob is the patriarch of the family. While he is not by any means a neglectful father to any of his sons, he shows clear favoritism for Joseph (the best version of Jacob goes to Joseph).

• Doesn’t necessarily connect on an emotional level with his sons.

• Tends to look out for what’s best for his success and the success of the business

without considering the feelings of others.

• In the biblical story he has a duplicitous past: When he was young he tricked his own

father into giving him the birthright.

• Also in the biblical story: When marrying, he was first interested in Joseph’s mother,

but was offered her sister instead (Judah and Reuben’s mother), so there’s a buried sense of “this isn’t exactly what I wanted” towards his other sons and towards that side of the family

Reuben (M) Age: Early 30s

Defining qualities: Peacemaker, empathetic, wise Physical characteristics: Non-specific; not muscular Ethnicity: Middle Eastern

Additional Info

• Judah’s right-hand man. Acts as the voice of reason and advisor to him.

• Reuben is the eldest son of Jacob and the engineer of the family’s products. He is

more meek than his brothers and doesn’t take the typical leadership role as the

oldest son (likely due to a lack of confidence and not a lack of ability).

• Very humble for the amount of skill he has

• He is a man of integrity who is in tune with his emotions and is very aware of feelings

of others. Can be honest in a sensitive way.

• He is very intelligent and perhaps doesn’t fit in with the cool or social crowds.

• He tends to believe in others more than himself and is very protective towards those

he cares about.

Joseph (M) Age: 17-19 years (18+ actors only)

Defining qualities: Charismatic, youthful, free-spirited, earnest

Physical characteristics: Should have a sense of innocence to his look; slender; good-looking Ethnicity: Middle Eastern – can be mixed since he has a different mother

Additional Info

• Half-brother to Judah and Reuben

• Joseph is the baby of the family. He is favored by his father, Jacob, due to the fact that his mother was Jacob’s true love.

• Has it all without trying; talented, nice, good-looking

• He can be described as “gifted”. Things that take people years to learn or attain, he

is able to do effortlessly.

• He is the type of person you can’t help but like, but to his brothers his perfection and

charisma is annoying.

• He openly shares his visions and dreams which can come off as gloating (maybe a

tinge of wanting to impress his brothers) but he is earnestly trying to help

• May speak out of turn at times without realizing it.

• Wants a relationship with his brothers, seeks to fit in with them, but is unsuccessful
