MENA, 35-40. Sami’s favorite Aunt. Iraqi, fluent Arabic speaker (Iraqi dialect), smoker, wise & mellow, tells it like it is. Maternal but not a mother.

(MAGDA RAMSEY)

MENA, Iraqi, 63, looks 43 Sami’s Mom. Iraqi, or Fluent in the Iraqi dialect of Arabic. Familiar with Chobi Iraqi Debke Dancing. Sardonic, elegant and pristine. Very concerned with appearances and wouldn’t be caught DEAD in a Wal-Mart. Born to be MOTHER-OF-THE-BRIDE.

MENA, early 70’s Sami’s Dad. Familiar with Chobi Iraqi Debke Dancing A dysfunctional force of nature. Rumpled and lovable. A Middle Eastern Walter Matthau. PhD educated Pharmacologist who wears his heart and causes on his sleeve, literally – usually seen sporting a t-shirt supporting his cause of the day. He’s a huge feminist and also a whiz at social media, much to the embarrassment of his family.

MENA 60s playing 70s Featured Dancer. Skilled in Chobi Iraqi Debke Style. Silver Fox with good knees and ability to perform the low crouching Debke moves.

LOGLINE:

As a child, SAMIRA “SAMI” RAMSEY learned to be an incurable romantic, thanks to her rom-com loving, mystical aunt. Now, on the verge of turning 40, Sami is about to marry ADAM. But never mind love, how big is the wedding? That’s what her mother wants to know. Because the only thing Iraqi moms like more than a party is a lavish wedding party. Sami just needs to get through this wedding and then her life with Adam will be her own... right?

My So-Called Iraqi-American Wedding asks the question, “How do you listen to your heart when everything around you is so damn loud?”
