Production Description

“In Between – New York Christmas” is a short ensemble piece from a feature film by Joumana Rizk. At the Majik family Christmas dinner, a photo of Mona’s new spiritual teacher from India and Khalil and Billy’s gay demeanor clash with Maman and Papa’s expectations of this traditional 1980s Lebanese Italian family.

Filmmaker Bio:

Joumana Rizk is a film director, screenwriter, and producer. Her first short "31" won several awards and was a finalist at the New York Shorts International Film Festival. Her shorts "Wake Up" "Running Water" and “Belly to the Ground” are soon to be in the festival circuit. Joumana is a Yale MFA-trained theatre director and has enjoyed many years as such before venturing into film. She is now working on her thesis at Stony Brook University/Killer Films, a feature partly based on her experience as a member of the Lebanese diaspora.

Compensation and Contract

SAG Micro-Budget, Union, and Non-Union welcome.$241 per day plus 10%. Zoom rehearsals not paid

.Meals and transportation provided. Housing in Long Island is provided if needed.

Shoots in Shinnecock Long Island or Manhattan

Shooting Dates: October 11, 12, 13.

Local to New York City or Long Island preferred.

Characters

MONA: Seeking a woman who can play Middle Eastern and or Mediterranean. She is in her 30s, a theatre director, married to John and mother to Kyle. Gracious, sincere in an insecure and arrogant kind of way, intuitive. (Some French and or Lebanese Arabic preferred). LEAD

KHALIL: Seeking a man who can play Middle Eastern and or Mediterranean. He is in his late 30s charming, anxious, a chameleon, melancholy, kind, the one who keeps the family together. When we meet him, he is bringing his partner Paul to spend Christmas with his very traditional Lebanese family for the first time. (Some French and Lebanese Arabic preferred). LEAD

MAMAN: Italian, 60s glamorous, a diva, effusively loving, unpredictable with anger mood swings. (Some French and Italian preferred). LEAD

PAPA: Middle Eastern, 70s, a commanding patriarch, dignified and humble, appears to be in his own world yet sharp. (Some French and Arabic preferred). SUPPORTING

BILLY: Italian/Mediterranean. The 40s, sarcastic, laid back, very funny, the entertainer of the family. He is Maman’s son from her first marriage. (Some French and Italian preferred). LEAD

KYLE: 5, a happy bubbly boy with ADHD. He is Mona and John’s son. SUPPORTING

PAUL: Latino, 30s, handsome, superior then deferential, jittery. He is Khalil’s partner, and he is being introduced to the family. This takes place in the 1980’s. SUPPORTING

JOHN: – 30s, white, suave, eager to please and to maintain peace in the family. SUPPORTING
